Hope for our Children’s Future: Parents as Teachers

I have just returned from a wonderful trip to

and Indonesia. I feel blessed and refreshed.

As I visited a school in Vancouver and many schools in Indonesia, I was reminded of the importance of the input of parents into the lives of their children, modeling and teaching the virtues we believe are important to us and to those we love. I think we forget that all of life is a learning experience. Our children in particular learn things because they are both taught and modeled.

What should we teach them? We need to teach them the values and attitudes which we, ourselves treasure. Values such as hard work, assuming responsibility, determination, building good relationships, stewardship of our resources, honesty, generosity, service, and most importantly, dependence on God. These are the foundations for a positive, fulfilling and hope-filled life.

How do we teach these? Pre-eminently we must model these things ourselves. We must work hard; take responsibility for our actions; be determined; take the time to build good relationships with our children and friends; be careful with the money and resources God has given us, not desiring money and goods above family and friends; desire honesty in the big and small areas of our life; show generosity of resources and time; serve God and others with graciousness, not as martyrs; and recognise our dependence on God in all areas of our life.

As you begin or continue to be your children’s teachers, remember

that it is your goal to prepare them during their young lives for the time when they will be making their own, adult, choices. That is the real value of education and you, parents and caregivers, are their most important teachers. Don’t be like my dear Dad who taught me many good traits such as determination, hard work, resilience, good social skills, leadership capacity and more, but left it to others to teach me the deep values of the Christian faith. Christian parents should teach and model Christian values and not leave it to others.

Teach these things (loving God with all your soul, mind and strength) to your children. Talk about them when you’re sitting together in your

home and when you’re walking together down the road. Make them

the last thing you talk about before you go to bed and the first thing

you talk about the next morning.

Deuteronomy 11:20

Hoping for a hope-filled future for you and those young ones for whom you care.
