Hope for Christian Parents

Being a parent is a very important role that the Lord chooses to give many people.

Children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3-5). In Titus 2:4, the Greek word “phileoteknos” appears. This word represents a special kind of “mother-love”. The idea that flows out of this word is that of “preferring” our children, “caring” for them, “nurturing” them, “affectionately embracing” them, “meeting their needs,” “tenderly befriending” each one as unique from the hand of God. Both mothers and fathers are commanded to do several things in the Word:

Availability – morning, noon, and night (Deuteronomy 6:6-7 Memorize his laws 7 and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.) Involvement – interacting, discussing, thinking and processing life together (Ephesians 6:4: Parents, don’t be hard on your children. Raise them properly. Teach them and instruct them about the Lord.) Teaching – the Scriptures, a biblical world-view (Psalm 78:5-6

God gave his Law to Jacob’s descendants, the people of Israel. And he told our ancestors to teach their children, 6 so that each new generation would know his Law and tell it to the next)

Training – helping a child develop skills and discover his strengths (Proverbs 22:6

Teach your children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still do right.) Discipline – teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6:4, Proverbs 13:24, 19:18, 22:15, 23:13-14, 29:15-17 Hebrews 12:5-11 Be patient when you are being corrected! This is how God treats his children. Don’t all parents correct their children? 8 God corrects all of his children, and if he doesn’t correct you, then you don’t really belong to him. 9 Our earthly fathers correct us, and we still respect them. Isn’t it even better to be given true life by letting our spiritual Father correct us?) Nurture – providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love, (Ephesians 4:29-32, 5:1-2, Galatians 5:22, 1 Peter 3:8-92 Timothy 1:77 God’s Spirit[a] doesn’t make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control.) Modeling with Integrity – living what you say, being a model by which a child can learn by “catching” the essence of godly living (Deuteronomy 4:9, , 11:3; Psalm 37:18, 37 Proverbs 2:20, 1 Colossians 9-11 In fact, we always pray that God will show you everything he wants you to do and that you may have all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives. 10 Then you will live a life that honors the Lord, and you will always please him by doing good deeds. You will come to know God even better. 11 His glorious power will make you patient and strong enough to endure anything, and you will be truly happy.)
