“Love...always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:6-8 NIV. Sometimes these are hard words to put into practice. Especially when we have bad days.
I am sure you have those days too – days when those around you need some encouragement and praise – or just someone that they can talk to. Unfortunately, I don’t always give those with some form of need the full attention I should! I have my list of to-dos, and well, I want to tick them all off! BUT that doesn’t always happen and sadly my words of encouragement don’t always happen either.
The apostle Paul, who wrote these words in the letter to the Corinthians, spent his time, his whole life, lifting and developing others. He was a great encourager. So what can we do better to lift the spirits of others; to bring them hope?
When you meet somebody today or tomorrow who needs encouragement, go ahead and give it to them. Think the best, believe the best, and express the best toward them - for your words will help to shape their destiny. This will be true for your children, your spouse, other family members and your friends.
Everybody works better with approval rather than criticism. Today or tomorrow you’ll meet somebody who has been beaten down by cruel words, lack of support, or by people who’ve abandoned them. Ask God to help you to bring them hope with your words of faith and encouragement.
Spend time really listening to those around you - and try to respond positively and encouragingly. And be persistent! Express gratitude and give them encouragement for every inch of progress they make. Flying off the handle or criticising them doesn’t help one bit. The only way to get lasting results is through patience and persistence. That to-do list will still be there tomorrow. Maybe, just maybe, that list isn’t all that important after all.
Remember, “Love...always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails...”Ask God to give you that kind of hope-filled love and be an encourager for Him today.
Thanks for listening.
