The Challenge of Untrained Teachers

This course is being designed to help meet the huge problem in Africa of untrained teachers who after completing junior high school (mostly equivalent to year 10 in Australia or Form 5 in Vanuatu) are appointed as primary teachers without any formal training. Because most of these teachers would need two years of formal study just to complete their secondary education to qualify to enter Tertiary training and because most of them need to work the course will be planned as an inservice professional development course. The course could have the following features:
• It will be a part time course which on completion will be equivalent to a year for full time tertiary training;
• It will be conducted after school hours, or in school time set aside by the school and/or using intensives in a holiday periods;
• It will be taught using distance education approaches;
• It will involve reflection and will require the ideas to be put into practice;
• It will be commence at year ten (Form 4) standard but will plan to educate the students to a level of understanding equivalent to at least university entrance standard;
• Evaluation and assessment will include both practical and theoretical elements;
• Opportunity will be provided where practical for some practice teaching in another school;
• The untrained teachers will learn under the supervision of trained teachers who have also completed a short course to prepare them to be supervisors. Ideally these supervisors should have completed Phases 1 and 2 at least of the Effective Teaching Series;
• Trained course co-ordinators will supervise the work and standard of the supervisors and monitor evaluation.
The course will be developed in association with Joshua Teachers College (JTC) in Tanzania. JTC is a non-denominational evangelical training college in Arusha Tanzania.
