In Bethlehem long, long ago
The night was still before
a virgin peasant girl
gave birth on a bed of straw! As the silence of the night
was rent by her labour cries,
shepherds on surrounding hills
sat talking around their fires.
The heavens were torn asunder
with a terrifying sight
and frightened country shepherds
were amazed by the heavenly light.
The sounds of heavenly singing
filled the quiet evening then
and the angels' voices spoke
of "peace and goodwill to men"
As the shepherds come to the stable
they hear the baby cry
and there with wide-eyed wonder
they see their Saviour lie.
But the sounds we hear at Christmas
are commercialised and slick
and peace and good will are hard to find
in a world so lost and sick
So let us bring to Christmas day
the sounds of praise again.
Let's lift our voice and with angels sing
of "peace and goodwill to men"
