EDUCATING FOR CHANGE
Effective Teaching Program a unique approach to training Christian teachers
Rev Bob Frisken AM
A new teacher training program called the "Effective Teaching Series" is the first phase of a plan of Educating for Change being implemented by New Hope International. The program is being hailed as a breakthrough in changing the way schools are operated. The Education Director of the SSEC Education Authority, Joash Maneipuri, spoke of it as a new schooling paradigm and said it offered the best hope the Church had for real change. The vision for the SSEC in the next three to four years is "to grow a mature church, impacting the nation touching the world." Rev Festus Suruma, Bishop of the South Seas Evangelical Church in the Solomon Islands, opened the recent Effective Teaching Series training seminar conducted by New Hope International. He spoke of the importance of this training program for the Church. He said that after the recent instability, the Church needed to take a lead in training young people from a Christian perspective and this unique course being offered by New Hope International gave the church a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. All the Principals of the SSEC Community Schools, its National Secondary School, the Rural Training Centres and Bible Colleges attended. The opinions of the church leaders were warmly supported by the responses of the delegates who quickly saw that the Lord had provided them with a powerful tool for change in their schools. The Education Secretary of the United Church in the Solomon Islands was so impressed by the approach that he invited New Hope International to conduct courses for the 60 schools operated by his Church in Western Province. This approach has the support of officers of the Solomon Island Ministry of Education

PNG Next Year
Biango Buia, one of the leaders of the United Church Education Department in PNG said that he had searched for a long time for something that would change his schools and enable them to recover the ground that had been lost. He believed that this approach was the most promising program that he had seen and invited New Hope International to conduct training seminars in 2007 to enable the teachers in the more than 400 school operated by the Church to be trained. The schools of the Baptist Union of PNG will also be involved in this training program.

Certificate of Educational Leadership
The Certificate of Educational Leadership is an award given by New Hope International to graduates of the four-year training program taught in four week-long intensives. It has two parts: “Effective Teaching” is designed to train the Principals or other trainers how to use the Training Manual developed by NHI in delivering inservice training to their staff. Leadership Training” is designed to assist the professional development of the leaders.

We Need Your Help!
Christian schools in Australia and New Zealand have an unprecedented opportunity to make a difference in our region. The program that New Hope International has developed in partnership with Australian schools will give high standards of training to both the principals and their staff that would otherwise be unobtainable. While the course is not expensive by Australian standards it will cost nearly $40,000 to reach over 4,000 teachers and about 200 hundred trainers next year in the Solomon Islands and PNG. While we have been promised some funding from Baptist World Aid (Australia) we will need to raise significant amounts of money and have a good number of volunteer teachers to undertake this course effectively. Could you please help by being involved as a school in the “You Can help Appeal”? If each teacher in New Zealand and Australian Christian schools would have just 50 cents a week deducted from their pay NHI could cover its share of the costs of this program and have some money for other important work. Many teachers will want to give more than 50c and after all even $2.00 a week is less than we often pay for a cup of coffee! Email rfrisken@bigpond.net.au for more information
